A shocking change for the pair

While identical twins are bound to grow up with striking similarities, not just in their appearance, but in their interests and personalities, the same could be said for Brenda and Bonnie Bowers.
Apart from one huge difference - Bonnie is now a man.
ITV's Secret Life of Twins takes an in depth look at the startling bond twins share, following the lives of different pairs of identical twins, revealing how their close relationships can end in the most unexpected ways.
We meet 51-year-ago Brenda Bowers who was born seven minutes after her identical twin sister Bonnie.
The twins shared the same upbringing, always played together, attended the same school and the same church.
However, around 11-years-old, while Brenda began to take an interest in boys, Bonnie started being attracted to girls, with Brenda even beginning to notice her sister becoming more masculine.

After school, Bonnie stayed at home while Brenda left for college in Seattle, and Bonnie later called her sister to say that she was attracted to women.
Brenda admits: "I felt a big sense of betrayal after that. I thought ‘We’re identical, we’re the same, and you’re messing with that. You’ve just flipped my world upside down, because this is all I’ve known, this is my identity.’”
However she was in for another shock, as Bonnie later revealed she was undergoing a sex change to become a man.
In 1998, Bonnie became Aiden. His choice has had a huge effect on both their lives.
Aiden says: “Who wants to be a transgender person? Who wants to actively take a step to live a very marginalised life and one that could be significantly loaded with hardship?”
